How to prioritize your company's digital investments
A framework for management: prioritize improvements by business value, available resources and the team's ability to adopt change.
Start with operational obstacles
A digital roadmap does not have to begin with a list of tools. Bring the relevant teams together and ask where information gets lost, which tasks are repeated and which decisions arrive too late.
Describe each problem with an observable example. “We need artificial intelligence” does not define a need. “The team has to search several folders manually for the right procedure” does provide a basis for analyzing alternatives.
Prioritize initiatives by impact and dependencies
For each initiative, identify whom it helps, what change is expected and what is needed before starting. A sales dashboard may depend on organizing customer identifiers. A portal may require a review of price lists.
Evaluate the preliminary steps too. Organizing sales information can make several later improvements easier. A limited first stage helps you learn without committing the entire budget from the start.
Assign owners to turn plans into action
Every initiative needs a business owner who can make decisions and a technical lead who understands the dependencies. Also define who will validate delivery and who will operate the solution afterward.
Set concrete acceptance criteria. For example: incoming requests must have an identifier and an owner, and incomplete cases must remain visible for review.
Make time to adopt change
Implementation includes documentation, training and process adjustments. If a tool changes the way people work, the team needs to take part before launch.
Prepare a transition plan: which data will migrate, which tasks will temporarily remain in the previous system and how to report problems. Launch should include a recovery procedure.
Review the plan at agreed intervals
A roadmap helps you make decisions; it should not freeze priorities. Review what you have learned, which dependencies have changed and which initiatives are no longer relevant.
