Sales indicators that help you decide what to do next

How to choose sales, customer and operational indicators that help management prioritize actions using shared information.

Start with a decision

A dashboard is useful when it helps someone decide what to do. Before choosing charts, ask what the sales team needs to monitor: pending orders, trends by channel or products that need attention.

Every question should have a possible action. If a metric changes and nobody knows what to review, it probably lacks context or a more useful definition.

Write down the definition of every indicator

“Monthly sales” can mean orders received, documents issued or payments confirmed. Clarify the event, the date used, how cancellations are handled and whether taxes are included.

Also record the source, update frequency and owner. This reference avoids arguments between teams calculating different figures under the same name.

Check data quality

Check that customers and products are identified consistently across teams. If one account appears under different names, a report may provide an incomplete view of the business relationship.

Compare totals against an agreed source and document differences. A dashboard should show its latest update and warn when a source is unavailable rather than present old information as current.

Provide context and ways to investigate

An isolated value can be misinterpreted. Define comparisons relevant to the company and allow people to review the details behind a change. Not every user needs the same level of access.

Avoid assigning causes automatically. A decline may relate to seasonality, catalog changes or incomplete data. Reporting should support investigation and distinguish facts from hypotheses.

Keep the set manageable

Start with metrics the team will actually review. Assign a review routine and record which decisions they helped inform. Remove or adjust indicators that do not provide clarity.

Sales information changes with the business. A solution for information to support business decisions needs documentation and regular review of its definitions to remain useful.
