Connecting sales and operations: what management needs to decide
Five decisions for evaluating how to share orders, prices and customers across teams, with clear costs and responsibilities.
Define the problem the investment should solve
Connecting the sales channel to operations makes sense when it helps avoid repeated work, handle orders more clearly or reduce information discrepancies across teams. Before approving a proposal, identify the difficulty currently affecting the business.
Bring sales, administration and operations together. Each team may experience a different problem within the same order. A shared decision avoids shifting the burden from one team to another.
Agree who owns the information
Determine where prices, availability and each customer's terms are managed. If two teams update the same information, there must be a rule for resolving differences.
Management needs to know who can approve changes and who keeps those data current. Responsibilities must accompany the tool from the start.
Compare the full cost
Ask the proposal to explain what current tools include, what needs to be purchased and what ongoing costs to expect. Some features may depend on additional plans or services.
Include the time the team will spend reviewing information and learning the new way of working. The investment does not end at launch.
Decide what happens when a problem occurs
Ask how incomplete orders, outdated information and duplicate requests will be detected. Agree who will receive alerts and how the team will continue serving customers while the issue is resolved.
Management does not need to define the technical solution. It does need to check that operations have a clear way to continue and that every pending issue has an owner.
Start with a stage you can evaluate
Choose a channel, a group of customers or part of the order process. Define what should improve and how the relevant teams will review the result.
Before expanding the scope, check that the team understands the work and can resolve information discrepancies. Learn about our approach to connecting information across teams.
